Teaching Shoe Tying to Your Child

September 26, 2016

Tying your shoes is a huge feat for a child (no pun intended) and a big milestone when it comes to getting dressed. With multiple methods, songs, poems, and stories all explaining different ways to accomplish this goal, it can be challenging to know what is the best procedure for a child, your child. At B.A.S.I.C.S. we teach what’s called the Two Loop Method.

Tying shoes (once shoe is on foot):

  1. Pick up right lace with right hand
  2. Pick up left lace with left hand
  3. Cross laces to make an X
  4. Fold lace on right side through hole using right hand
  5. Pull both laces tight
  6. Using both hands to make a small hoop with right lace
  7. Hold hoop with right hand only
  8. Use left hand to wrap left lace around hoop
  9. Push left lace under the bottom of the hoop
  10. Pull on both hoops until tight

When teaching this to a child we will use what we call a task analysis. This is a list of each steps that you need to follow to complete the task, in this case tying your shoe. We take show each step with either modeling it for them, having them read each step, or verbally talking them through each step. Summer is a season for flip flops and sandals, but fall will be here before you know it so teaching this now is a great time make sure your child is ready for the cooler days.

We also use this video to model our procedure. Kids Learn to Tie Their Shoes
